Little Things

You hear it all of the time… “It’s the little things that make the difference.”

This morning I was stopped at the corner of 88th Avenue and 151st Street after dropping #4 off late at the Jerling front entrance and saw something “little” that touched my heart.

There were a few kids waiting to cross the street and on a day like today, when the wind just smacks you in the face with painful, cold force, the kids were all bundled up.  One of them was struggling to keep warm and the ever-patient and ALWAYS present crossing guard looked over and noticed.

Without hesitation she reached over and helped the child by pulling his trapped coat hood from under his backpack and pulled it over his head.  She did this not out of obligation, but kindness.  She had been out there all morning making sure our little ones made it across the street safely. She smiled at him and made sure he was all bundled.  And my heart melted.

It’s far too often the case that these things go unnoticed or don’t happen at all.  Maybe it isn’t a huge deal, and who knows if that child’s mom will ever know that the awesome crossing guard lady was so sweet and kind to her son. And it doesn’t matter.

What does matter is that our community is sprinkled with love and kindness and a little boy’s ears were a little bit warmer and his heart a little bit fuller and I’m grateful for the little things on this Friday morning.
