Today would have been Lucille Ball’s 100th birthday. I feel a closeness, almost a kinship when I think of her and her character on the “I Love Lucy” show.
My mother and I would watch her show and giggle throughout as she went on her everyday adventures. Ricky reminded us of my dad, who is not a musician nor Cuban, but did happen to speak English with a foreign accent and spoke rapid Arabic when angry.
He happened to be married to my very American mother who in many ways was like Lucy. She was prim and proper from a distance but when you got to know her she had a very silly streak that kept you laughing.
When I watch I Love Lucy reruns now, I am still amused by the similarities the show poses to my own upbringing and truly enjoy every episode, no matter how many times I see it.
Happy Birthday, Lucy.
Here are a few of my favorites..
I always loved episodes with Lucy, Ethel, and Fred performing with Ricky at the Copacabana. Lucy was a comedienne, but a singer and dancer first!
