Snow Much Fun!

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I am super excited about the news of the long-awaited arrival of a real snowfall!  There is just something about the way the snow blankets everything, making even the simplest of backyard items seem almost majestic.  Last year the kids watched in amazement as we got our first heavy snowfall.  Continue reading

Brownie Swirl Cheesecake

When the weather is dreary and cold like it is now, I love to turn that oven on and bake away.  Yesterday was one of those days when I knew a decadent dessert was in order.  The kids are on Christmas break so I let them choose the dessert de jour.  Two of them asked for brownies while the other two agreed on cheesecake.  I knew that Brownie Swirl Cheesecake was the answer to this dilemma.  If you have never made this, I highly recommend trying it, it is very easy and super delicious!

Santa Hat Brownies

Hoping to find a cute new holiday dessert to break away from the tired christmas cookies and pies, I was browsing through some fun food blogs and found this awesome recipe over at daisy’s world and just had to share.  These would be an awesome addition to any Christmas/Winter themed dessert table.  The kids are going to love these and can even help out with assembly. Here We Go ‘Round The District 135 Rumor Mill…

Now that a tentative agreement has been made between the board and the union reps, we now sit back and wait until the January meeting when it becomes official.  Read the press release here.  Many rumors have been flying around about changes in the administration but nothing has been confirmed….yet.   Here is what I have heard from other parents, local business owners and my neighbor’s hair dresser’s cousin’s mailman’s sister’s pet poodle.  Continue reading

Children First: Rally Brings Together Parents, Citizens and Teachers

Last night over 200 people gathered at the Administration building for a rally before the negotiation meeting took place.  I was there and was immediately impressed with the community togetherness that was displayed by the simple act of standing for what was right and just.  The crowd chanted “children first”, isn’t that what this is all about, the children?  I hope the board and the union’s negotiating team keeps the children’s best interest in mind while negotiating the future of their education here in Orland. ‘Tis The Week Before Christmas

I came across this facebook post that was written by a former District 135 teacher in support of an end to a long overdue contract negotiation process.  Regina Knapp has given me her permission to repost here and said that although she does not know any specifics in regards to the contract negotiations, she wanted to show her solidarity with her former colleagues as well as her desire for a resolution to the ongoing negotiations. Full House at District 135 School Board Meeting

Photo: Orland Park Patch

You may have noticed the little green signs in many cars in the neighborhood that read “District 135 teachers are working without a contract”.  This prompted me to start asking questions and fueled my inquiries as to why this is the case.  What did I find?  Not much more than the information I gleaned from the sign itself.  Teachers that I know cannot say much and the administration and board members are not talking either. Continue reading

Mom, What’s a Blago?

(**I dug this one out due to news of Blago’s sentencing, enjoy!**)

On the way back from the grocery store, I was listening to the radio.  My kids were talking amongst themselves when my youngest heard an unfamiliar word and asked, “Mom~ what’s a Blago?” Continue reading
