Thankful for the Little Things

Every year I ask that my children express what they are thankful for on Thanksgiving.  Of course, we are all forever thankful for our families and friends, our health and the world around us.  As I ran around town yesterday and today gathering all things needed for tomorrow, I noticed all of the little things around me that I was thankful for.

I am thankful for.. Continue reading

Disregard for Handicap Parking at School

Here in Orland Park we are blessed to have the awesome “valet” drop-off and pick-up system at our public schools.  Teachers stand outside and make sure our little ones get safely into the building.  I love this luxury, especially when the morning does not afford me the time to change out of my PJ’s.  I was surprised to learn that this is not common practice elsewhere as my kids have never attended school anywhere else.  It makes me appreciate it even more. Up at 6am, I lay motionless on the couch in the family room as the kids make their way to the kitchen for breakfast.  My eldest takes his place at the head of the table and looks around, surely he was wondering where in the world his breakfast was.  Since it hurts to speak, I patiently wait to see what would happen next. My Own Private Island

No, I did not win the lottery. The island I am referring to is purely symbolic. Let me explain…Over 15 years ago, I was a young bride living in the city, preparing for my first ever Thanksgiving dinner party. On the invite list were my mom, dad and stepmom, my sister, brother and his family. I was a bit pouty because at 21, I wanted to invite my friends as well and my husband talked me out of it, saying that the guests would not mesh well. Continue reading

Loyal OP Mom subscriber, Carrie, has clued me in to another local kids eat free option.  Francesca’s, located at 12960 S. LaGrange Rd. in Palos Park, offers a kids eat free discount on Mondays.  One child age 12 an under can receive a complimentary item from the kids’ menu with every adult entrée purchased.

A gluten-free menu is available as well.

Yet another excuse to take a break from kitchen duties and have a nice dinner out with the family.

Since 2003, Francesca’s Vicinato has been a neighborhood favorite, offering standard casual Northern Italian cuisine with influences from Rome and the surrounding areas of Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio.

Besides Monday’s kids eat free special, the restaurant also offers a 5 course dinner special on Tuesday for $24.99, half-price bottles of wine on Wednesdays and $5 martini Thursdays.
